Although the physician initially planned to discharge her, she was unable to walk and refused to leave. A rare bacterial brain infection — later identified as meningitis — went undiagnosed, delaying critical antibiotic treatment. As a result, she now requires 24-hour nursing care for the rest of her life. The jury awarded $11.11 million in damages.
